Animation can be an amazing medium to portray something that live-action movies cannot take ‘Love, Death and Robots’ for example. But judging it solely based on its storyline is rather unfair because it has so much more to it. The story of the anime is quite generic and that’s the reason why many anime viewers downplay this one a little. Even the themes of the show subtly drift between music, love, and tragedy, all of which hit right in the gut. But apart from being visually and musically stunning, ‘Your Lie in April’ goes really deep with its plot as well. Love can indeed make everything brighter and the visuals of this anime represent that. Kousei, one of the major characters, is full of a world with muted dull colors but all that changes when Kaori enters his world. The film also have dreamy feel which really suitable for the mood of the story. Not the just the music, but even the vibrant colors portrayed in the anime play a critical role in what it tries to project. The managed to justify the settings especially at the Kousei’s house scene and the bridge. She portrayed Kaori just as how I imagined she would be in real life.Īlso, the house, the bridge and the school setting. She did well for her role and I definitely become her fan after watching the movie. I actually like how the actress portrayed Miyazono. I read the manga and watched the anime, so I know the difference would be from the film. Also, talk about the budget and how short the time it was filmed, Unlike movies I know which generally took up 3 years or more and still gave me unsatisfactory product, the movie by far gave me the same aura just how I imagined it o how it will be filmed. Tbh, it is very hard for the producers to imitate the final scene. They stay true to the story nd focused on Kaori and Kousei’s relationship more as the time of movie is shorter than in the anime (24 episodes). However, this movie somehow justified the story. It is already given that the live action is not good in general as a Japanese movies. Watching the anime I found that it shares a common theme with Neon Genesis Evangelion – both protagonists try to run away from difficulties, and are saved by a group of women. The movie drops the beautiful background, and has much less varieties of the shots, making a dull climax. There is also special lighting of the stage. There are many different varieties of shots of the piano at different angles, the protagonist, and close-ups of different things. The climactic scene in the anime has a beautiful background of sky and clouds, and more visual effects on the girl. We are only told later that the performance was good enough so they continue to be invited for further performances. In the movie we don’t get much from the audience to express their approval of the music – not even a “Bravo!”. In the anime the screen is filled with colors, and the audience says they see the music is colorful. The movie makes this mistake and removes all the fantasy-style depiction of the emotion of music. If anyone thinks that a live action movie must have everything realistic, that is most certainly false, as perfectly demonstrated in Beauty and the Beast (2017). I think this is an important justification of the story, but is again removed from the movie. The original story has a one line dialogue that says the protagonist needs to grow by facing tragedies. The movie removed this dramatic comparison. The recovery as presented in the movie also brings much less impact.ĭramatically, the anime makes it clear that the situation with the girl is reminiscent of that of the mother, and the protagonist has to go through this difficulty again. Likewise, when this inability is explained as a gift, the movie fails to elaborate it other than saying it lets music flow from the heart. In the anime we get a deep sea representation of it, coupled with muffled sounds, and a haunting hallucination of the dead mother – this visual portrayal of the difficulty involved is truly important. The live action version takes a different approach in some areas that undermines the dramatic and visual impact seriously.įirstly, the inability to hear piano tone is done badly and is much less obvious in the movie. However, the 22-episode anime (2014-2015) is so much better, even after considering the comparatively limited duration of the movie. The main storyline is still mostly the same as the charming original, and the romance aspect is still good. A violinist girl shows up, and invites him to play a violin / piano duet with her.Īs a standalone movie, it is not bad. The protagonist stopped playing piano because he could no longer hear the piano tones since the death of his mother. Your Lie in April (Blu-ray release ) is a live action adaptation of a manga series.
